A little preparation turns a good pediatric visit into a great one. These five steps take about ten minutes total and help your doctor reach an accurate diagnosis faster — especially over video.
1. Log symptoms with times
"Fever since Tuesday evening, highest 102.4°F, responds to ibuprofen" beats "she's been sick a while." Note onset, pattern and what helped — the timeline often points straight at the cause.
2. Photograph anything visible
Rashes, swelling, throats and eyes photograph well. Take pictures in daylight from two distances before the visit; flares fade and the doctor needs to see the worst of it.
3. List medications and doses
Include over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and exactly how much you gave and when. A quick photo of each bottle label covers everything.
4. Write down your three questions
Visits fly by. Decide in advance the three things you most want answered — sleep, feeding, behavior, school notes — and ask them first.
5. Set up your child for success
Pick a calm, well-lit spot, keep a favorite toy nearby and have water ready. For toddlers, plan the visit after a nap; a rested child lets the doctor see their true baseline.
